In the past the idea of mulching was to mulch stumps and brash to leave a blanket mat to surpress vegetation. The problem using this method is that it causes problems with run-off and soil erosion due to the lack of soil structure. The machinery used wasn’t capable of incorporating mulch and soil together. Because there was no soil structure or regrowth the nutrients from the blanket mulch concentrated in the underlying soil. When it was time to replant the soil was too rich. This gave rise to excess re-stocking failure of up to 70%. By incorporating the soil and mulch in a ideal 50:50 mix, only feasible using our heavily modified equipment (developed in conjunction with the manufacturers) early regrowth prior to planting helps maintain an ideal balance. This technique has been tried and tested alongside the MOD and, to date, replanting has seen an almost 100% success rate.
